Samsung Health's Future Strategy is 'Sleep'... Improving 'Sleep Quality' with Galaxy Watch
Hon Pak, Head of Samsung Electronics Digital Health Team, Future Strategy Announcement
"Core of Samsung Health Future Strategy is Sleep"
"Updates on Blood Pressure, ECG... Additional Sleep Improvement Features Without Medication to Launch in Second Half"
Samsung Electronics has identified 'sleep' as the future strategy for its health management solution, Samsung Health, and plans to enhance related features. Since abnormal sleep leads to health issues, drowsy driving, and other daily accidents causing enormous social costs, the company aims to promote 'healthy sleep' among users by leveraging the advanced functions of the Galaxy Watch.
64 Million Monthly Users of Samsung Health... Galaxy Watch Sleep Feature Users Doubled
Hon Pak, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team at Samsung Electronics' MX Division, held a media briefing on the 23rd at Samsung Electronics' press room in Jung-gu, Seoul, stating, "Through Samsung Health and Galaxy Watch, we will continuously introduce innovative features that allow users to better understand and consistently manage their health."
SVP Hon Pak emphasized that one of the major pillars of Samsung Health's future strategy is the sleep feature. He said, "Samsung Health users show great interest in the sleep function, which is the starting point of personal health. In fact, the number of Galaxy Watch users utilizing the sleep feature has approximately doubled compared to last year."
He added, "Samsung Health is evolving into a hub that connects Galaxy's innovative technology with users' health. Various features such as blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), and women's menstrual cycle are being updated, and with additional features in the new Galaxy Watch to be released in the second half of the year, users will experience more powerful health management functions."
Samsung Health encompasses sleep, fitness, mental health services, and health indicator monitoring, growing into a global health solution used by 64 million people worldwide every month. After continuous enhancements, various health-related features such as blood pressure and ECG were added in 2020. In 2021, the Galaxy Watch was equipped with Samsung Electronics' innovative 'BioActive Sensor,' evolving into a more professional digital health platform. Last month, a women's menstrual cycle prediction feature using the temperature sensor of the Galaxy Watch5 series was introduced.
Samsung Electronics chose the 'sleep function' as the future strategy for Samsung Health because quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health and is a very important factor connected to overall health.
As awareness of the importance of sleep increases, the number of Galaxy Watch users who measure their sleep at least once a week has also approximately doubled compared to last year.
Among all Galaxy Watch users, half use the sleep feature weekly, and 40% of them use the sleep feature at least three times a week to monitor their sleep health, according to SVP Hon Pak.
Sleep Data Analysis with 'BioActive Sensor'
Galaxy Watch users can check various health data through the built-in 'BioActive Sensor.' The accelerometer measures tossing and turning during sleep to understand sleep cycles, and the optical heart rate sensor analyzes sleep depth based on heart rate and oxygen saturation. Additionally, the BioActive Sensor supports monitoring users' heart health by measuring blood pressure and ECG.
To support users' actual sleep improvement, Samsung Electronics provides personalized sleep coaching programs based on different sleep patterns. Depending on the classified sleep type, personalized sleep coaching programs are offered to help improve sleep. These programs are designed based on cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI), developed with research institutions to aid sleep improvement without medication.
The sleep coaching program provides users with easy-to-follow sleep guides and tips for daily life and continuously offers result analysis and encouraging messages for motivation.
Samsung Electronics helps users create an optimized sleep environment through the 'Samsung SmartThings' solution, which connects not only mobile products like Galaxy smartphones and watches but also various home appliances. When the Galaxy Watch recognizes that the user has fallen asleep, connected lights and air conditioners are automatically adjusted, and bedroom curtains close, creating an optimized sleep environment for the user.
Along with enhanced sleep management features, Samsung Health plans to introduce more personalized fitness functions and strengthened health monitoring features. To this end, it collaborates with various professional institutions and health service partners.
Through continuous collaboration with hospitals, universities, and research institutions, Samsung is developing health algorithms and functions to advance the Samsung Health experience. Recently, it also announced the 'Health Stack,' designed to allow research institutions to easily collect and analyze participants' data.
