Gurye-gun Publishes Educational Book on the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident

Distributed to Elementary, Middle, and High Schools in Gurye-gun on the 22nd

Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it will publish an educational book on the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident titled If We Could Bloom as Wildflowers and Meet Again and distribute it to elementary, middle, and high schools starting from the 22nd of this month.

The county compiled cases of damage caused by the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident that occurred in the region and produced the educational book based on verified facts.

The newly produced educational book includes the progression of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, individual cases from the Gurye area, and testimonies from the victims' families.

It is designed with easy vocabulary and illustrations so that even young students can easily understand, and uses large print.

County Governor Kim Soon-ho said, “Gurye is located on the slopes of Jirisan Mountain, which was a hideout for the rebel forces during the incident. More than 3,000 victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident unofficially lost their lives here, but the term ‘Yeosu-Suncheon Incident’ has been engraved as a taboo word among the bereaved families who carry trauma and pain, making it difficult to form a consensus among the residents. I hope that the production of this educational book will help build a consensus among the residents and serve as an opportunity for harmony where the victims and their families can be viewed with warm eyes.”

Meanwhile, since the enforcement of the Special Act on the Investigation of the Truth and Restoration of Honor of the Victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident in January 2022, local governments across Jeollanam-do, including Gurye-gun, have conducted damage surveys of the victims’ families of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident.

They are also promoting various ‘educational and cultural projects’ and ‘historical site maintenance projects’ to raise public awareness of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident.
