The Jeonnam Health and Environment Research Institute announced at 11 a.m. on the 22nd that a fine dust advisory would be issued for the western and eastern regions of Jeonnam, with hourly average concentrations of 160㎍/㎥ and 208㎍/㎥, respectively.
The hourly average concentrations as of 11 a.m. were 129㎍/㎥ in the central region of Jeonnam and 117㎍/㎥ in the Gwangju area.
This fine dust advisory is expected to continue until the 23rd, and no ultrafine dust advisory has been issued.
Fine dust refers to particles with a diameter of 10㎛ or less, and an advisory is issued when the hourly average concentration is 150㎍/㎥ or higher for more than two hours.
A warning is issued if the average concentration remains at 300㎍/㎥ or higher for more than two hours.
The institute estimates that this fine dust is yellow dust originating from the Gobi Desert and the Inner Mongolian Plateau, carried in by northwesterly winds.
The Gwangju Health and Environment Research Institute explained, "The wind that should push the fine dust away is stagnant, so it is not dispersing."

Meanwhile, when a fine dust advisory is issued, it is recommended that the elderly, children, patients with respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular patients refrain from going outside until the advisory is lifted; outdoor classes at daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary schools be shortened or suspended; unnecessary vehicle operation be minimized; and operating hours of fine dust-emitting businesses and construction sites be reduced.
