Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Begins Research Project to Improve Middle School Districts and Zones
2025 Academic Year Middle School Freshman Assignment Application Goals
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 22nd that it will commence a policy research project to develop improvement measures for middle school districts and zones within the jurisdiction.
The research project will be conducted by the Korea Local Autonomy Economic Research Foundation over a total of six months from May to November. It plans to propose improvement measures for school districts after analyzing changes in the urban environment, identifying problems, and assessing the demands of education consumers.
A middle school district refers to a designated area or group of schools established to allocate new middle school students through a lottery system. A middle school zone is an area designated for direct admission to a specific middle school without a lottery, considering factors such as distance, transportation convenience, and other regional conditions.
Currently, the overall school-age population in Gwangju is declining. Although the number of middle school students is expected to temporarily increase in the 2025 academic year, it is projected to continuously decrease thereafter.
However, in some areas, the school-age population has been concentrated due to apartment complex development projects, causing issues such as overcrowded middle school classes.
Accordingly, the city education office plans to conduct a multifaceted analysis of the current operation status and problems of middle school districts and zones within the jurisdiction through this research project.
In particular, it is expected that practical improvement measures for middle school districts and zones can be derived by reflecting changes in the public transportation system resulting from the construction of Urban Railway Line 2.
Subsequently, the feasibility of implementing the improvements derived from the policy research project will be reviewed. The middle school districts and zones will be revised and officially announced after gathering opinions from education consumers, aiming for the allocation of new middle school students in the 2025 academic year.
