Gangdong-gu Expands Smart Crosswalks to Improve Pedestrian Safety
A Total of 1.2 Billion Won Invested This Year… Expansion of Floor Pedestrian Signals and Voice Guidance Assistive Devices
Focus on Elementary School Routes such as Sinam Elementary and Myogok Elementary for Children's Safety
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) is expanding the installation of smart crosswalks, including floor-type pedestrian signals and voice guidance assistive devices, to create a safer walking environment.
Smart crosswalks are traffic safety facility assistive devices that use information and communication technology to support traffic signals and provide various signal information to pedestrians, helping ensure safe walking.
Gangdong-gu will invest 1.2 billion won this year to additionally install smart crosswalks in areas with high traffic volumes of vulnerable road users and pedestrians, such as protection zones, intersections, and children's school routes.
In particular, efforts will be focused on improving elementary school commuting routes.
Starting with Myeongil Elementary School in 2020, the district installed floor-type pedestrian signals at 91 crosswalks and voice guidance assistive devices at 20 crosswalks by 2022. This year, the installation will be expanded to 43 crosswalks with floor-type pedestrian signals and 6 crosswalks with voice guidance assistive devices.
Among these, floor-type pedestrian signals at 23 crosswalks and voice guidance assistive devices at 5 crosswalks are located on children's school routes. New installations will be made in protection zones without floor-type pedestrian signals such as Sinam Elementary School and at newly established crosswalks like the diagonal crosswalk near Myogok Elementary School.
