Jeonnam Provincial Council Forms 10-Member Special Committee on Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant... Activities to Last 6 Months
The Jeonnam Provincial Council announced on the 17th that it passed the "Resolution to Establish a Special Committee on Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant" at the 2nd plenary session of the 371st extraordinary meeting and appointed 10 members.
At the 1st meeting held that day, the Special Committee on Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant elected Assemblywoman Jang Eun-young (Democratic Party of Korea) as chairperson and Assemblyman Mo Jeong-hwan (Democratic Party of Korea, Hampyeong) as vice-chairperson. The special committee's activity period is set for six months, from May 17 to November 16.

View original imageThe special committee consists of 10 members: Jang Eun-young (Proportional Representation), Mo Jeong-hwan (Hampyeong), Kim Moon-soo (Shinan 1), Jo Ok-hyun (Mokpo 2), Park Moon-ok (Mokpo 3), Na Gwang-guk (Muan 2), Jeong Gil-soo (Muan 1), Choi Jeong-hoon (Mokpo 4), Jeong Cheol (Jangseong 1), and Park Won-jong (Yeonggwang 1).
The special committee was formed to develop comprehensive and multifaceted alternatives for the spent nuclear fuel storage facilities, as the saturation point of the wet storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant is projected to be in 2030, and to establish a pan-government support and communication system for the local community.

Chairperson Jang Eun-young stated, "The construction of a dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant is directly related to the safety and lives of the entire nation, so transparency and safety must be ensured," and added, "We will actively strive to seek coexistence measures between the nuclear power plant and the local community to protect the lives and safety of the residents."
