[Asia Future Business Forum] How Is AI Used in Industry? Samsung, LG, and Hyundai Answer
2023 Asia Future Business Forum Held
'The Future of Our Companies Led by Artificial Intelligence (AI)'
The 2023 Asia Future Business Forum was held under the theme "The Future of Our Companies Led by Artificial Intelligence (AI)." The first session, titled "The Future of AI," featured presentations by companies that are directly applying or developing AI in the field.
Samsung Electronics shared cases of AI utilization in the semiconductor (DS division) sector under the theme "AI and Semiconductors Creating the Future." SAIT is the organization that develops core technologies essential for Samsung Electronics' future growth in advance. Its AI Research Center focuses on technology research to increase AI applications in the semiconductor business.
Choi Chang-gyu, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics SAIT (formerly the Comprehensive Technology Institute) AI Research Center, explained, "As the AI era intensifies, the demand for semiconductor performance increases, so we are conducting research to introduce new concept memory technologies and products."

One example is using AI technology to identify defective wafers during manufacturing. They are also exploring ways to improve yield by predicting problems in a virtual fab environment that simulates an actual fab before the chip is completed.
Introducing AI to reduce various costs incurred during the semiconductor manufacturing process is also a major task. Currently, it takes 3 to 6 months to produce semiconductor chips from wafers, but as the process moves to below 2 nanometers (nm; 1 nm = one billionth of a meter), it could take up to a year. Given the enormous future costs and time involved, minimizing risks in the middle of the process is essential.
Vice President Choi said, "Samsung Electronics is committed to becoming the world's best semiconductor company in utilizing AI," adding, "Although we talked about manufacturing now, we plan to apply AI technology in many areas including marketing and customer communication. In the future, every company will have to transform into an AI company."

Speaking on the topic "The Era of Large-scale AI and Corporate Response Strategies," Director Bae said, "There is no business area unrelated to AI," and added, "The level of AI utilization will vary depending on the amount of data held and investment scale, which will directly affect corporate competitiveness."
Director Bae summarized the stages of AI development into three phases: ▲ ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence), focused on executing specific tasks ▲ AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), capable of performing a wide range of tasks based on reasoning comparable to humans ▲ ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence), possessing intelligence surpassing human capabilities.
He explained, "When AI reaches ASI, it will have a significant impact on various industries," adding, "There will be major changes beyond prediction and imagination, such as reversing aging and extending lifespan to achieve human immortality, or the disappearance of distinctions between virtual and real worlds."
He emphasized, "AI is not a technology that replaces humans but evolves together with humans, so indiscriminate fear of AI needs to be overcome," and added, "Socially responsible leaders should understand the trust issues AI entails and proactively respond to AI innovation through discovering specialized functions and accumulating data."

Lee Jae-ho, Team Leader of the Robotics Vision AI Team at Hyundai Motor Group, mentioned the potential for expansion in the robotics field. He noted that robotics can be used not only for safety inspections in industrial environments like factories but also in various fields such as delivery and customer service targeting consumers.
Team Leader Lee said, "The core technologies of robotics?perception, judgment, and control?will be utilized as future mobility solutions," adding, "Robots integrate advanced technologies, and through technological convergence, they will create new businesses and have a significant ripple effect across industries." He further stated, "The 'ideation' of how and in which fields AI will be utilized will determine the success or failure of services."
