Sim Sang-jung: "Coin Dealer Kim Nam-guk, Parliamentary Position Is a Side Job"
"Political Career Ethics Must Be Firmly Established"
Call for Lawmakers to Participate in Comprehensive Coin Investigation
Sim Sang-jung, a Justice Party lawmaker, on the 16th called for the revocation of the parliamentary seat of Kim Nam-guk, an independent lawmaker who left the Democratic Party of Korea amid controversy over virtual asset investments.
In an interview with CPBC Radio's 'Kim Hye-young's News Sympathy' on the same day, Sim said, "This is an incident that declares the moral bankruptcy of our politics," and raised her voice, saying, "The National Assembly Ethics Committee must strictly investigate the truth and revoke his parliamentary seat."
Sim emphasized, "Lawmaker Kim regarded his parliamentary activities as a side job and devoted himself to private profit activities like a coin trader," adding, "The National Assembly should use this as an opportunity to firmly establish the professional ethics of politicians by punishing those who forget the duties of a lawmaker, making it clear that such people cannot serve as lawmakers."
Sim said, "How many young people have been wiped out here (in coins)?" and argued, "It is the role of politicians to warn about the risks of virtual asset speculation and eliminate market uncertainties, but the result of acting as a promoter was the unprecedented lawmaker coin scandal."
She also stressed the need to conduct a full investigation into the virtual asset holdings of lawmakers. Sim said, "We must quickly conduct a full investigation and discipline lawmakers who have spent a lot of time on private profit activities, establishing clear standards defined by the Constitution and the National Assembly Act regarding the true role of lawmakers." On the same day, the Justice Party submitted consent forms for information provision from all six of its members to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission.
