Gokseong Melon First Shipment of the Year

Last Year, First Nationwide Registration of Geographical Indication System

Gokseong Melon, the representative agricultural specialty product of Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Sang-cheol), is starting its first shipment this year.

According to Gokseong-gun, starting from the 11th, Gokseong Melon Co., Ltd. and the Gokseong Nonghyup Agricultural Products Distribution Center have officially begun melon production.

Due to its geographical characteristics, Gokseong-gun has soil rich in organic matter and a large temperature difference between day and night, resulting in high sunlight efficiency.

Gokseong Melon is known for its high sugar content and excellent quality.

The county has focused on producing high-quality melons through a systematic process from seedling cultivation to final selection to improve quality.

In particular, to develop Gokseong Melon into a premium brand, intensive support has been provided for facility improvements, and investments have been made without hesitation to establish infrastructure for the sixth industrialization of melons.

As a result of these efforts, last year, Gokseong Melon became the first melon crop in the nation to be registered under the Geographical Indication system, achieving export performance of 172 tons and export revenue of $505,729, thereby increasing trust and recognition of Gokseong Melon not only domestically but also among overseas consumers.

Additionally, Gokseong-gun continues to strive to build a cooperative system for stable and high-quality melon cultivation by supporting non-destructive joint sorting machines, distribution logistics costs, export logistics costs, and packaging materials.

A county official said, “We thank the farmers who have worked hard to cultivate the highest quality melons in Korea again this year. Moving forward, along with the first melon shipment, we will do our best to improve agricultural income by pioneering various distribution channels and conducting direct transactions from production areas and planned exhibitions targeting urban consumers.”
