Remains Presumed to Be from 5·18 Mass Burial Discovered in Haenam, Jeonnam
Three sets of human remains, presumed to have been secretly buried during the May 18 incident, were discovered in Haenam, Jeollanam-do.
On the 15th, according to officials from the May 18 Democratic Movement Truth Commission (hereafter the Investigation Committee) and others, the committee secured testimony on the 14th from soldiers of the 20th and 31st Divisions, who participated as martial law troops during May 18, stating that three bodies were buried in Haenam-eup, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do.
Subsequently, within a day, the Investigation Committee excavated several sets of remains from a mountain near the Baekyari Reserve Forces Training Center in Haenam-eup.
The mountain where the remains were found is accessible only by passing through the Haenam-gun Reserve Forces Training Center, leading the Investigation Committee to presume that the burial was secret and related to the May 18 incident.
