Chewing Gum Stuck to Head, Underwear Photoshoot... 'The Glory' Real-Life Teen Imprisonment
Ulsan District Court Sentences A for Severe Abuse of Female Middle School Student
"Cruel Method, Lacking Basic Respect for Others' Dignity..."
The main teenage perpetrator who assaulted a middle school girl for allegedly badmouthing her, including hitting her and burning the back of her hand with a cigarette, was sentenced to prison. The court, in an unusual move before sentencing, ordered the detention of the main suspect, Defendant A, during the trial.
The Criminal Division 11 of Ulsan District Court (Chief Judge Lee Daero) announced on the 14th that Defendant A, who was tried on charges including violation of the Act on the Punishment of Violent Acts, was sentenced to 4 years and 3 years in prison (long-term and short-term sentences) and fined 300,000 won.
Defendant B, who was also indicted, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation, probation supervision, and ordered to perform 120 hours of community service.
In February 2021, Defendant A and others assaulted Defendant C, who was one year younger, about 20 times by slapping her on the cheek on the rooftop of a PC room in Ulsan. They burned the back of C’s hand with a cigarette, stuck chewed gum in her hair, and poured a beverage over her head. They grabbed C’s hair, who was bleeding from her nose, dragged her on the floor, and stripped her upper clothes in front of other students watching.
Although they attended different schools, it was investigated that they committed these assaults after hearing that Defendant C had badmouthed them.
About two weeks before this incident, they had also assaulted Defendant C and taken her clothes. Notably, Defendant A took another victim to a lodging facility, assaulted her, set fire to her hair, forced her to wear only underwear, and filmed the incident, then posted the video in a messenger chat room with five people including the victim.
At the time of the crimes, Defendant A and others were third-year middle school students, and Defendant C was a second-year middle school student. Although they attended different schools, they were acquainted by face.
The prosecution sought 8 years and 6 months (long-term) and 5 years and 6 months (short-term) imprisonment for Defendant A, and 5 years (long-term) and 3 years (short-term) for Defendant B.
The main perpetrator, Defendant A, had previously been sent to a juvenile detention center for one year for another case. Additional offenses such as school violence and theft were revealed later, and the cases were consolidated for trial.
The court noted that Defendant A continued committing crimes even after release from the juvenile detention center, and in April, during the ongoing trial, issued a detention order ex officio to detain her in court.
Chief Judge Lee Daero stated, “Defendant A’s methods of crime were cruel and violent, and she lacked even the basic attitude of respect for others’ dignity.” He added, “Considering that she directly executed the main parts of the crimes, continued to commit offenses without remorse after the initial indictment, and made no efforts to restore the damage or show sincere repentance, a severe punishment is inevitable.”

At the sentencing hearing held last month, the prosecution requested that Defendant A be sentenced to 8 years and 6 months (long-term) and 5 years and 6 months (short-term), Defendant B to 5 years (long-term) and 3 years (short-term), and the other two defendants to 3 years (long-term) and 2 years (short-term) each. At that time, the court detained Defendant A in the courtroom as a staff member.
