'Annual Salary of 300 Million KRW, 19-Year-Old Genius Girl'... The Identity of Intel's Senior Developer
U.S. and Korean Online Communities Buzzing
Youngest Graduate in Harvard Computer Engineering History
Intel Employee Since Age 16, Senior Developer Position
A 19-year-old Intel female employee earning an annual salary of 300 million KRW is becoming a hot topic. Recently, information about the Indian-American genius girl named Ria Cherubu’s LinkedIn profile and her estimated salary has been circulating on the US online community Reddit and domestic communities.
Cherubu is Intel’s lead developer for ‘AI (Artificial Intelligence) Ethics.’ She is a well-known figure who has appeared in American media. This is due to her resume, which could be called ‘a genius among geniuses.’ She graduated from high school at age 11 and entered Harvard University, the top prestigious university, majoring in computer engineering, completing her bachelor’s degree at 14. She was the youngest graduate in the history of Harvard’s computer engineering department. Cherubu wrote in her LinkedIn introduction that she “graduated in the top 10% of her class.” After earning her bachelor’s degree, she simultaneously pursued a master’s degree at Harvard and interned at Intel, and since completing her master’s in 2020, she has been working as an Intel employee.
Intel has not disclosed any information regarding her salary. However, indirect speculation is possible. The US employment information company ‘Glassdoor’ reports that the average annual salary for Intel developers is $241,874 (approximately 320 million KRW). Although Cherubu’s years of experience are relatively low at 4 years, she holds the position of ‘lead developer,’ which is one level higher than a regular developer. For this reason, various communities estimate that her annual salary exceeds 300 million KRW.
Cherubu was born in Arizona, USA. Both of her parents were ‘elites’ from India. Her father worked as a computer programmer, and her mother was a software engineer. Cherubu was exceptional from a young age. Local media reported anecdotes such as “She memorized the names of all US presidents by 18 months old,” “Mastered multiplication tables at age 3,” and “Had already mastered an 800-page major textbook by age 11.” Her ‘youngest graduate’ status at Harvard was clearly evident from the start.
Cherubu is currently actively working as a leading developer at Intel. She was one of the speakers at the keynote of the ‘Innovation 2022 Conference’ held last September. This is Intel’s annual developer event, broadcast live worldwide. At that time, the moment when Cherubu and Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger gave each other a ‘high five’ attracted attention.
The ‘AI Ethics’ field that Cherubu currently oversees is one of the most focused areas following the emergence of ChatGPT. It addresses the fact that AI technology can cause significant issues such as sensitive information leaks, privacy violations, and indiscriminate surveillance, aiming to prevent and correct these problems. Intel has emphasized ethics from the past. Intel’s principle is to ‘act with honesty, transparency, and uncompromising integrity.’ Cherubu is at the forefront of upholding this principle.
