Gwangju Police Agency Sends 57 Drug Offenders to Prosecution in One Month
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency has formed a Joint Task Force for Drug Crime Crackdown and is conducting a large-scale focused crackdown.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency on the 11th, the Joint Task Force for Drug Crime Crackdown has referred 57 people to the prosecution so far on charges including violations of the Narcotics Control Act. Among them, 15 were sent to prosecution under detention due to the seriousness of the cases.
By type of crime: ▲ 48 for use of psychotropic drugs ▲ 8 for marijuana ▲ 1 for narcotics.
The task force is composed of 159 investigators and began its activities on the 12th of last month, scheduled to disband in November.
Local police stations have consecutively uncovered illegal cultivation of poppies.
The Dongbu Police Station booked three people without detention, including an octogenarian identified as Mr. A, on charges of cultivating several poppy plants divided in a vegetable garden within an urban residence.
The Seobu Police Station also cracked down on and booked three elderly people in their 80s who cultivated poppies together in a garden in front of their house.
The Gwangsan Police Station arrested two people in their 60s and 80s who cultivated more than 100 poppy plants together in a residential area, and the Nambu Police Station also uncovered an octogenarian who cultivated a small amount of poppies.

A police official stated, "In cases of illegal cultivation and planting of narcotics such as poppies, regardless of the amount cultivated, if intent is proven, they can be severely punished just like other narcotics."
