Gwangju Nam-gu to Conduct Intensive Collection of Used Batteries for Two Weeks Starting the 15th
Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will conduct a focused collection of used batteries from the 15th to the 26th to prevent environmental pollution caused by heavy metals and to increase resource recycling rates.
Nam-gu announced on the 8th that residents who bring 10 used batteries during the collection period will receive 2 new batteries in return.
Nam-gu collects used batteries annually and sends them to the Korea Battery Recycling Association. There, the collected batteries are sorted by type and sent to recycling companies that process each type accordingly.
The used batteries delivered to recycling companies go through processing to be reborn as silver oxide batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, primary lithium batteries, lithium-ion and polymer batteries, and manganese-alkaline battery products.
According to Nam-gu, the total amount of used batteries collected by the district office from 2020 to last year reached 45 tons, averaging about 15 tons per year.
Looking at the yearly status, 11.84 tons were collected in 2020, and 18.16 tons and 15.02 tons were gathered in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
