Yeongsangang Regional Environmental Office Completes Demolition of Old Muncheokgyo Bridge on Seomjingang River
The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office announced on the 4th that it has demolished the old Muncheokgyo Bridge located in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, to enhance flood control stability on the Seomjingang River.
The Yeongsangang Office explained that during the heavy rains in August 2020 in the Seomjingang River basin, the old Muncheokgyo Bridge, which is located below the planned flood level, was submerged due to rising water levels and was affected by backflow from the levee.
Therefore, they established a plan to demolish the bridge, which was originally used as a county road connecting Gurye-eup and Muncheok-myeon, and to reinforce the embankments on both sides.
Village residents insisted on preserving the bridge, citing inconvenience in transportation if it were removed, but the conflict was resolved by jointly drafting an agreement containing contents for mutual development together with Gurye-gun and the residents' consensus group.
Demolition work began on January 2 of this year and was recently completed.
During the demolition process, an eco-friendly construction method was used that completely blocks dust and sludge emissions generated during demolition to protect the Seomjingang aquatic ecosystem and Gurye-gun’s water supply.
Jeong Seonhwa, head of the Yeongsangang Office, said, "By the end of May, we will remove the temporary road used for demolition and reinforce the embankments on both sides to ensure there is no disruption in preparation for summer floods."
