Police Officer Caught Fleeing After Drunk Driving Accident
An on-duty police officer who caused a rear-end collision while driving under the influence and fled the scene has been apprehended.
On the 4th, the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station booked Police Officer A (early 30s), affiliated with the Gwangju Police Agency Mobile Unit, on charges including hit-and-run causing injury under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and violations of the Road Traffic Act.
Officer A is accused of causing a rear-end collision by consecutively crashing into two vehicles waiting at a traffic light at an intersection in Suwan-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, around 2:20 a.m. that day, and then fleeing the scene.
He abandoned the vehicle about 200 meters away from the accident site by the roadside and ran away.
Two drivers of the other vehicles were injured in the accident, but their lives are reportedly not in danger.
The police discovered the abandoned accident vehicle during a nearby search and identified Officer A as the driver through personal belongings that could confirm his identity, such as his uniform and police equipment.
Breathalyzer results showed that Officer A's blood alcohol concentration was at the level warranting license suspension.

The police are investigating the exact circumstances, believing that Officer A was driving to work for an early morning dispatch when the drunk driving accident occurred.
