New Zealand Airline Introduces Passenger Plane Sleeper Cabins
Additional Fee Allows Use for Up to 4 Hours
New Zealand national airline Air New Zealand is attracting significant attention from travelers with news that it will install beds in economy class.
Recently, the New York Post reported that Air New Zealand plans to introduce a sleeping cabin called Skynest by 2024.
Skynest is a sleeping space created by removing some seats between premium economy and economy class, divided into six bedrooms. Skynest consists of three levels, with two beds in separate spaces on each level. Each sleeping area is equipped with items to aid comfortable sleep, such as pillows, bedding, earplugs, fluorescent lights, and USB ports.
An Air New Zealand spokesperson said, "Passengers can use Skynest for up to four hours by paying an additional fee," adding, "Research on sleep cycles conducted to introduce Skynest found that a typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes, making up to four hours an ideal duration."
The cost of Skynest has not yet been determined. However, the New York Post reported that it is expected to be priced between approximately $400 and $500 (about 536,000 KRW to 670,000 KRW) for four hours.
Greg Foran, CEO of Air New Zealand, said, "Skynest is an innovative space that will change the perception of economy flights," adding, "As Air New Zealand leads long-haul travel, we focused on ensuring customers can get sufficient rest."
In fact, Air New Zealand operates flights departing from New York JFK Airport to Auckland Airport in New Zealand, which is the fourth longest route in the world, operating non-stop for about 17 hours.
