Debate at US School Over 'Let's Go Brandon' Hoodie: Free Speech Violation or Insult?
"Violation of Freedom of Expression" Lawsuit Filed by Students
School States "Let's Go Brandon" Constitutes Profanity
A school authority in Michigan, USA, banned the wearing of sweatshirts with the phrase 'Let's Go Brandon,' but was eventually sued by students.
The slogan 'Let's Go Brandon,' which expresses opposition to President Joe Biden, originated in October 2021 when an NBC reporter interviewed NASCAR race winner Brandon Brown (29) and misinterpreted the crowd's chant of a profanity against Biden as "Let's Go Brandon." Since then, it quickly spread among Republican supporters as an anti-Biden slogan.

On the 26th (local time), according to local media and Fox News, Ms. A, the mother of two students (7th and 9th graders) at Tri-County Middle School in Michigan, filed a lawsuit against the school on behalf of her two sons, stating, "My two sons were disciplined for wearing 'Let's Go Brandon' sweatshirts to school. The school is disciplining students who show support for former President Donald Trump or express opposition to President Biden."
In the complaint submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Ms. A stated, "The school vice principal and teachers forced my sons to remove the 'Let's Go Brandon' sweatshirts. This is a violation of the First Amendment's freedom of expression and discrimination based on political beliefs."
On the other hand, the school argued, "'Let's Go Brandon' has the same meaning as the F-word," and stated, "The dress code prohibits students from wearing clothing that contains obscene, vulgar, or offensive messages."
However, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), representing the students, argued that "'Let's Go Brandon' is a refined political slogan that expresses opposition to President Biden without using profanity or vulgar language."
Attorney Connor Fitzpatrick said, "Criticism of the president is at the core of political speech protected by the First Amendment. Basic rights of students cannot be restricted simply because someone might associate it with profanity."
Attorney Harrison Rosenthal emphasized, "Students should not be disciplined for expressing political beliefs; rather, they should be encouraged to do so. Students should not only learn about constitutional rights but also be able to freely exercise those rights."

The plaintiffs are requesting the court to block the school's "political belief discrimination" revealed through the ban on 'Let's Go Brandon' attire and the "dress code that causes excessive attention."
