Leeum Museum of Art Hosts Academic Symposium on 'The Current Research of Joseon White Porcelain'
On the 29th, Leeum Museum of Art and the Korean Art History Association Co-Host Event
The Leeum Museum of Art announced on the 26th that it will hold an academic symposium titled "The Current State of Research on Joseon White Porcelain" in collaboration with the Korean Art History Association.
The symposium is planned to focus intensively on Joseon Dynasty white porcelain in connection with the ongoing Leeum Museum exhibition "Joseon White Porcelain, the Nobleman's Aspiration." Amid the recent growing interest in crafts, emerging scholars from various institutions such as domestic and international museums and universities will present diverse approaches and innovative research results on white porcelain, making this event significant as a collaborative research opportunity between theory and museum practice.
This symposium will feature research presentations on previously unexplored aspects of white porcelain, mainly by scholars in their 40s active in Korea, Germany, and Japan. The first half will focus on the meanings embedded in different types of white porcelain, while the second half will address various issues surrounding white porcelain.
Jang Nam-won, president of the Korean Art History Association, stated, "As interest in crafts rises recently, Korean ceramics are gaining attention overseas, including at the Milan Triennale of Craft, with particular focus on white porcelain. This symposium will bring together researchers from museums, universities, and institutions like the Cultural Heritage Research Institute to discuss white porcelain, and all the newly presented research topics are noteworthy."
Kim Sung-won, deputy director of the Leeum Museum of Art, said, "This symposium emphasizes the sharing of innovative research outcomes by emerging art historians on site, and such partnerships are essential for both academia and practice. We are also preparing another symposium in collaboration with the Korean Art History Association in 2024, linked to the Hoam Art Museum's exhibition 'Women and Buddhism,' under the theme 'Gender and Korean Art.'"
