Fatal accidents account for 20%... Special crackdown on cargo truck traffic violations
Crackdown on Reckless Driving, Speeding, and Signal Violations
The police will focus on cracking down on traffic violations committed by large freight trucks and construction machinery. This measure comes in response to the recent high fatality rate in traffic accidents involving freight trucks in Seoul.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 26th that, from today until the 31st of next month, they will conduct joint traffic accident prevention publicity activities with the Seoul city government for five weeks and carry out special crackdowns on traffic violations by freight trucks.
They plan to strengthen enforcement against traffic violations such as reckless and speeding driving, designated lane violations, and signal violations by freight trucks. Additionally, they will focus on cracking down on freight trucks that have not obtained permission to travel within the urban area and those that do not comply with restricted travel times.
According to an analysis of Seoul traffic accidents over the past three years by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, freight truck-related accidents accounted for 9% of all accidents, while fatalities from freight truck accidents accounted for 20% of all traffic accident deaths.
The number of fatalities from freight truck accidents was 43 in 2020, 56 in 2021, and 43 last year, representing 16.9% of the total 219 traffic accident deaths.
