Biodegradable Plastic Overseas Certification Service Available Domestically
It is now possible to obtain overseas certification for biodegradable plastics domestically.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 23rd that Isol Industry, a company producing polylactic acid (PLA) sheets, applied for certification (DIN CERTCO) to export biodegradable plastic containers in the second half of this year, and the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL) will launch the first export-related certification testing service.
Until now, domestic companies have faced difficulties in acquiring overseas certifications required by export countries due to the lack of compatible domestic certifications abroad, resulting in continuous consumption of time and costs for obtaining foreign certifications.
Accordingly, KCL has been designated as the first domestic testing institution by the German DIN CERTCO certification body to enable biodegradable testing and evaluation within Korea.
With certification testing now possible domestically, an improvement in exports by Korean companies is expected, and the Ministry of Environment's environmental label certification process is also expected to be simplified, which will help stimulate domestic demand.

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, "We plan to support additional designations as testing institutions for various certification conditions such as natural soil and marine environments, not only for the composting conditions designated this time," adding, "We will support domestic companies to ensure no difficulties arise during exports through consultations with overseas certification bodies in the United States, Australia, and other countries."
