Revisiting Yongsan US Military Base from the 1960s-70s... Exhibition in July
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 19th that it will hold the third special exhibition reflecting the historical significance of the Yongsan area at the Yongsan Urban Memory Exhibition Hall in July.
The Yongsan Urban Memory Exhibition Hall opened in April 2021 in the public facility building of Harrington Square in Central Park, Zone 4, around the International Building.
The exhibition hall has been operating an archive space (record room), seminar rooms, and educational experience programs, documenting the urban transformation history of Yongsan.
As one of the communication methods for creating Yongsan Park, the nation's first national park, the city has held an annual special exhibition since the opening of the exhibition hall.
The first special exhibition in 2021, titled "July 16, Yongsan," revealed scenes such as the bombing of the Yongsan Railroad Maintenance Depot and the Yongsan base area by U.S. forces on July 16, 1950, to recapture Seoul.
The second special exhibition held last year, under the theme "Seoul Yongsan: From Reconstruction to Leap," showcased materials focusing on the daily lives of Seoul residents from the start of Seoul's liberation on September 28, 1950, through the 1960s.
This year's exhibition is planned to help understand the urban landscape changes of the Yongsan U.S. military base and surrounding areas during the 1960s and 1970s.
Citizens can view historical materials such as photos and videos of the urban landscape of Yongsan and the areas around the Yongsan U.S. military base at the time when urban development began, not only at the exhibition hall but also through the online channels of the Yongsan Park citizen communication space.
