Now in its 11th year, the 'Tourism Data Utilization Contest' is designed to discover new tourism services using tourism data such as basic information on tourist attractions, images, videos, and location information (POI) of buildings around roads.
Previous contests selected projects such as 'Shuing,' an application providing rankings of Busan tourist attractions, and 'Jimcarry,' a webpage offering nearby tourism information based on a travel luggage delivery service.
This year's contest features additional points awarded for jointly utilizing public data APIs from other institutions available on the Public Data Portal alongside the organization's TourAPI, encouraging the development of various new and convergent (mashup) services.
In particular, collaboration with the new partner, Busan Tourism Organization, provides extra points to participating teams based in Busan developing Busan-related services, and strengthens support for regional digital tourism activation through post-support such as education and consulting.
Besides TourAPI, a service that opens tourism information as open APIs for private sector app and web service development, extra points will be awarded for jointly utilizing public data APIs from other institutions available on the Public Data Portal.
The scale of awards and prize money has been expanded to a total of 80 teams and 80 million KRW compared to last year. Prize money will be distributed differentially, including the Grand Prize (1 team, 15 million KRW), Excellence Awards (8 teams, 3 million KRW each), Merit Awards (16 teams, 1 million KRW each), and Encouragement Awards (55 teams, 500,000 KRW each).
In addition to prize money, the organization will provide education, consulting, and promotional marketing support to the winning teams. Various benefits will also be offered, such as extra points during document screening for the 'Start-up NEST' startup nurturing program by the Korea Credit Guarantee Fund.
