The 9th Sentencing Commission Launched... Chairman Appointed as Professor Sangwon Lee of Seoul National University Law School
Selection of Crime Categories for 'Sentencing Guidelines Establishment' Starting This June
Professor Lee Sang-won (63, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 21) of Seoul National University School of Law has been appointed as the chairperson of the 9th Sentencing Commission.
The Supreme Court announced on the 10th that Professor Lee was appointed as the chairperson of the 9th Sentencing Commission, which will be launched on the 27th of this month. The Sentencing Commission consists of 12 members: the chairperson, 4 judge members, 2 prosecutor members, 2 lawyer members, 2 law professor members, and 2 members with academic knowledge and experience.
The 9th Sentencing Commission plans to hold a plenary meeting in June to select the crime categories for sentencing guideline establishment and revision, and to begin full-scale work on setting and revising sentencing guidelines.
Judge-turned-chairperson Lee previously served as the director of the Asia-Pacific Law Institute at Seoul National University, director of the Human Rights Center, director of the Law Library, president of the Korean Criminal Procedure Law Association, president of the Science and Law Research Association, president of the Korean Police Law Association, human rights commissioner at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, and academic chairman of the Korean Bar Association. He has also worked as a professional member and commissioner of the Sentencing Commission.
Judge members of the Sentencing Commission include Yoon Joon, president of the Seoul High Court; Yoon Seung-eun, director of the Court Library; Shin Sook-hee, judge at Suwon High Court; and Yoo Young-geun, chief judge of the Namyangju branch of the Uijeongbu District Court. Prosecutor members are Lee Joo-hyung, chief prosecutor of Suwon High Prosecutors' Office, and Kim Sun-hwa, head of the Trial and Litigation Department at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.

Lawyer members include Lee Jae-heon, senior vice president of the Seoul Bar Association, and Chae Geun-jik. Law professor members are Kang Soo-jin, professor at Korea University School of Law, and Kim Hye-kyung, professor in the Department of Police Administration at Keimyung University. Members with academic knowledge and experience appointed are Son Kwan-soo, head of KBS News Headquarters, and Baek Beom-seok, professor at Kyung Hee University Graduate School of International Studies and School of Law.
