Gwangju Buk-gu Selected for Excellent Retention Facility Installation Project for 3 Consecutive Years
Gwangju Metropolitan City Buk-gu announced on the 9th that the Sinangyo area district was selected for the ‘2024 Excellent Stormwater Retention Facility Installation Project’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, securing a project budget of 31.1 billion KRW.
An ‘Excellent Stormwater Retention Facility’ is a large-scale rainwater storage facility that prevents flooding and damage in low-lying areas caused by heavy rainfall.
This year, out of 15 newly applied districts nationwide, six final districts were confirmed, with Buk-gu’s Sinangyo area district selected as the top priority.
As a result, Buk-gu achieved the distinction of being the only autonomous district nationwide to be selected for three consecutive years since 2021, and with a total project budget of 62.4 billion KRW secured, it has gained momentum in creating a disaster-resilient ‘permanent safe city.’
In particular, it is said that the cooperation of Chonnam National University, Gwangju Metropolitan City, and local members of the National Assembly, who actively negotiated the planned installation site, greatly contributed to the selection of this project.
Buk-gu plans to complete related administrative procedures by the end of this year and, starting next year, proceed with basic and detailed designs, resident consultations, and complete the main project with an underground capacity of 30,000㎥ by 2026.
The aboveground idle area will be developed into an 8,600㎡ park to provide residents with a resting space.
Moon In, the mayor of Buk-gu, said, “With the selection of this project, we can establish a permanent safety system for the Sinangyo area, which is a frequent flooding zone,” and added, “Since this concerns the safety of residents, we will carefully manage every step of the process along with the existing two excellent stormwater retention facility projects.”
He also added, “We will continue to prioritize the safety of residents and devote all efforts to disaster prevention.”
