Gwangyang City Hosts Art Auction '2023 Gwangyang Art Auction'

Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 7th that it will hold the ‘2023 Gwangyang Art Auction’ from the 12th to the 16th at the Gwangyang Art Warehouse, exhibiting works by 14 mid-career artists active in ‘Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Gyeongnam’ and conducting an auction event.

The ‘Gwangyang Art Auction’ will be conducted by a senior auctioneer from Seoul Auction, one of Korea’s leading auction companies, who will provide explanations of the artworks while onsite visitors participate in bidding. A total of 14 works will be auctioned.

This event offers a rare opportunity to view works by mid-career artists all in one place, and it is expected to contribute to the revitalization of the Gwangyang Art Warehouse and strengthen the city brand of ‘Cultural Trade City Gwangyang,’ which promotes artistic exchange between cities.

Key artists participating include Jeong Haeyoung, who has held over 30 solo exhibitions and participated in art fairs focusing on plum blossom themes; sculptor Na Myungkyu, a graduate of New York University’s graduate school with 16 solo exhibitions and recognized skills; Kang Jongrae, honored with the Korea Art and Culture Merit Award; master potter No Geunjin of the Korea Federation of Artistic & Cultural Organizations; Jo Hyunsun, who presents rich Korean paintings through pine tree mineral pigment coloring; Park Dongyeol, a mid-career Western-style painter active in Gwangyang; and Lee Sangkwon, a watercolor artist?each a distinguished artist in their own right.

The exhibition will run for five days from the 12th to the 16th, with the auction event held only once on the 12th (Wednesday) starting at 4:30 PM alongside the opening ceremony.

Additionally, a professional docent will be present throughout the exhibition period to provide artwork explanations and assist with sales.

A Gwangyang City official stated, “This auction event offers a new experience to appreciate and acquire high-quality contemporary art and provides an opportunity to enjoy an exchange exhibition between Yeong and Honam region artists. We encourage active participation from companies and citizens alike.”

Meanwhile, the Gwangyang Art Auction is being held for the third time following events in 2019 and 2020. The first event invited promising artists nationwide, and the second invited emerging artists from Jeonnam, achieving a sales rate of 28% of the exhibited works.
