Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok: "Eradicate Drug Crimes and Thoroughly Seize Criminal Profits"
Daechi-dong Academy District 'Drug Drink' Incident Occurs
Lee "Please Cooperate Actively and Closely with the Police"
Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok instructed the nationwide drug crime task forces at the prosecution offices to "eradicate drug crimes and thoroughly confiscate criminal proceeds."
On the 6th, Prosecutor General Lee said, "The 'Special Drug Crime Investigation Team,' which consolidates the capabilities of various agencies such as the Korea Customs Service, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and local governments, will continue investigations into drug crimes. All frontline drug crime task forces are requested to actively and closely cooperate with the police, who mainly respond to drug use and domestic distribution."
He added, "With the increase in drug smuggling and distribution making access to drugs easier, last month there was even a case where a middle school student purchased drugs via SNS and used them. If such situations persist, it is a grave circumstance that could lead to the collapse of social foundations, including future generations. Therefore, swift and effective measures against drug crimes are necessary," he emphasized.
Earlier, from the 2nd to the 3rd of this month, an incident occurred in the academy district of Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, where adult men and women distributed drug-containing beverages to high school students, claiming they improve concentration, and later threatened the students' parents by saying their children had been administered drugs, attempting to extort money.
In relation to this, President Yoon Seok-yeol instructed the prosecution and police to thoroughly investigate drug crimes and recover criminal proceeds on the same day. President Yoon stated, "It is shocking that drugs have even infiltrated high school students," and said, "The prosecution and police must mobilize all investigative capabilities to root out drug distribution and sales organizations and pursue and recover criminal proceeds to the end."
