Taxi fare '1 won' paid for free rides... 20-year-old repeatedly defrauded 30 times in a year, sent to prosecution
A man in his 20s who repeatedly rode taxis without paying by exploiting the fact that taxi drivers do not check the transferred fare in their accounts was handed over to the prosecution on charges of habitual fraud.
On the 3rd, the Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul announced that they had sent Mr. A, who is accused of habitual fraud, to the prosecution in custody on the 31st of last month.
Mr. A is suspected of taking taxis 30 times from February last year to March this year in Seoul and Gyeonggi's Uijeongbu, Guri, and Namyangju cities by transferring an absurdly small amount such as 1 won or 10 won as taxi fare via account transfer.
It was found that he committed these crimes by exploiting the fact that when the fare is transferred to the account, the driver only confirms the deposit without checking the amount. The total taxi fare he took using this method was investigated to be 550,000 won.
He also used a method of entering the taxi fare amount in the 'sender' field instead of the 'transfer amount' field on the mobile banking transfer screen, showing it to the taxi driver, and then actually transferring a small amount to ride taxis.
The police obtained a seizure warrant for the suspect's account, identified his personal information, and arrested Mr. A during a stakeout at an acquaintance's house.
