French Prime Minister's First No-Confidence Motion Rejected... Falls 9 Votes Short of Majority
The first no-confidence motion against French Prime Minister ?lisabeth Borne was rejected by a margin of 9 votes on the 20th (local time).
The French National Assembly debated and voted on two no-confidence motions proposed by the opposition parties that afternoon. The first no-confidence motion received 278 votes in favor, falling short of the majority. At least 287 votes are required for the motion to pass.
The second no-confidence motion, proposed by the far-right National Rally (RN), is expected to be put to a vote soon.
Earlier, Prime Minister Borne announced that she would use the emergency legislative authority to bypass the National Assembly vote and directly enact the pension reform bill. Lawmakers opposing this move can propose a cabinet no-confidence motion within 24 hours.
