Suncheon City Receives Prime Minister's Award as an Excellent Women-Friendly City

Achievements of Localized Projects Including the Spread of Gender Equality Culture

Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 16th that it received the 'Prime Minister's Commendation' in recognition of its contribution to the creation of a women-friendly city at the 2022 Women-Friendly City Government Awards Ceremony held at the Government Seoul Office, hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

The Women-Friendly City Creation Merit Award is given to local governments that have actively promoted women-friendly city initiatives and contributed to creating a gender-equal community. After document screening and on-site inspections, only three local governments nationwide are selected as excellent institutions.

On the 16th, Suncheon City received the 'Prime Minister's Commendation' in recognition of its contributions to creating a women-friendly city at the 2022 Women-Friendly City Government Awards ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, held at the Government Complex Seoul.

The city was first designated as a women-friendly city in December 2017 and was re-designated in 2021. From 2022 to 2026, it has been implementing detailed projects as a second-phase women-friendly city with phased goals, focusing not only on women but also on the safety and care of socially vulnerable groups, leaving no blind spots.

This award was granted in recognition of the city's solid implementation of regional specialized projects based on public-private cooperation for creating a women-friendly city, including ▲ training gender equality honorary activists ▲ producing Suncheon-style gender equality standard teaching materials ▲ conducting various gender equality campaigns for citizens ▲ hosting the Gender Equality Video Contest for Shared Happiness in Household and Care Work ▲ creating women-friendly villages ▲ expanding safety monitoring.

In particular, the Suncheon City Gender Equality Relay Forum, which consecutively planned the 'Gender Equality Forum with Suncheon City Council' and the 'Gwangju-Jeonnam Women-Friendly City Forum'?a collaborative and solidarity platform where the city council, administration, and citizens jointly discussed gender equality and women-friendly cities and sought solutions?was highly evaluated for contributing to the establishment of a gender-equal culture.

A Suncheon City official stated, "Going forward, the administration will establish policies with gender-sensitive awareness and a women-friendly perspective, and we will do our best to lead citizen cooperation so that Suncheon can be experienced as a truly women-friendly city."
