Gwangyang City Council Member Jeong Hoe-gi Proposes Establishment of Municipal Museum
Request to Preserve Photos and Records During Demolition of Old Council Building in Jinwol-myeon
The Gwangyang City Council of Jeollanam-do (Chairman Seo Young-bae) held the 2nd plenary session of the 316th extraordinary meeting on the 15th and conducted the first municipal administration inquiry of the year.
Councilor Jeong Hoe-gi, who raised the municipal administration inquiry, asked about the meaning of Gwangyang City's vision, "Sustainable Global Future City Gwangyang," and stated that in order to overcome local extinction, it is necessary to discover regional characteristics and consider aiming for a local era.
He then cited "job expansion" as an example of a virtuous cycle structure that the city should promote for a "sustainable future city" and asked about the meaning of the slogan for the 8th elected term, "Era of Impression, Warm Gwangyang."
Gwangyang City still faces conflicts between the old downtown and the new town, as well as between natives and migrants. To resolve this, it is necessary to discover identity and strengthen bonds between regions and residents. He proposed "settlement education for retirees" and "introduction of regional studies as a regular subject for students."
He also pointed out that due to the lack of capability of research contractors, the damage is severe, and emphasized the need for Gwangyang City's independent efforts to strengthen research functions.
Councilor Jeong asked about the collaboration currently underway between the provincial art museum and the art warehouse, and ways to activate the linkage of various tourist resources within Gwangyang-eup. He urged the need for a virtuous cycle structure to create a sustainable city through the development of local tourism content linking the provincial art museum, Gwangyang Art Warehouse, 5-day Market, Gwangyang-eup urban regeneration project section, Chilseong-ri academic forest lodge, and the town fortress site (Gyeonggwang Square, Hwasein Square).
He also pointed out that there is no storage facility to keep local cultural assets (National Treasure No. 103 Ssangsaja Stone Lantern, Dontak relics, Gyocheon Village agricultural tools, etc.), and these are currently stored in other regions or local village warehouses. He proposed the construction of a municipal museum to properly preserve local cultural assets and to foster local residents' pride.
He then inquired about the problems of the Gwangyang City Gazette and plans for an expanded edition, and requested that if the old council building in Jinwol-myeon is demolished, photographs and other records be well preserved.
