Promoting community adaptation and independence of people with developmental disabilities through digital physical activities
Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced on the 9th that it has opened the ‘Smart Development Training Center’ within the Yeongdeungpo-gu Disabled Welfare Center.
The Smart Development Training Center is a facility that provides various physical activities and therapeutic environments for people with developmental disabilities using community-based digital technology. It is located in the program room on the first floor of the Yeongdeungpo-gu Disabled Welfare Center, covering an area of 95.1㎡ with a height of 4.2m.
The district applied for the ‘2022 Smart Development Training Center Operation Institution Public Contest’ hosted by Seoul City. As a result, the Yeongdeungpo-gu Disabled Welfare Center was selected as the operating institution for the Smart Development Training Center, securing a project budget of 200 million KRW, and construction was carried out over four months starting from September last year.
The Smart Development Training Center offers ▲‘Climbing Content’ where participants complete missions while climbing ▲‘Motion Recognition Content’ including dot-to-dot, arithmetic puzzles, and kiosk training ▲‘Smart Walking Content’ involving walking or running in virtual space and practicing the route to the welfare center ▲‘Smart Roller Content’ such as insect collecting, claw machine, and flying bird ▲‘Interaction Training Content’ including digital piano, toy matching, and whack-a-mole game ▲‘Digital Sketch Content’ where drawings are scanned and animated on a large screen, recreating real-life environments in virtual reality to overcome physical limitations caused by disabilities and enabling personalized experiential activities.
The Yeongdeungpo-gu Disabled Welfare Center operates the ‘Sensory Integration Pair Group’ program for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities using the Smart Development Training Center’s content. The ‘Sensory Integration Pair Group’ is a program that motivates and boosts confidence in people with developmental disabilities by allowing them to manipulate and experience digital content. The center plans to recruit participants from March 13 to 24 and start the program in April.
Additionally, the Smart Development Training Center will pilot operate play and experiential spaces for siblings and families of people with disabilities to support the convenience of disabled families.
The district expects that people with developmental disabilities will benefit from improved basic physical fitness as well as therapeutic and educational effects through experience-centered activities rather than one-way educational methods.
