Police Officer Brutally Assaults Disabled Person... Prosecution Files Charges Without Detention
An active-duty police officer who violently hit a disabled person's head has been indicted without detention.
The Criminal Division 2 of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Young-hwa) announced on the 10th that police officer A, who is accused of assaulting a disabled person (violation of the Welfare of Disabled Persons Act and special assault, etc.), was indicted without detention on the 9th.
Officer A, holding the rank of police inspector, belonged to the 2nd Mobile Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and is accused of hitting the head of a person with a severe lower limb disability twice with a chair and several times with a fist at a restaurant in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, on November 13 last year.
After the incident, Officer A was placed on standby and then reassigned to a frontline police station in Seoul.
Three hours before the assault, Officer A had a dispute with the victim over cigarette smoke in an alley near a nearby restaurant and was investigated at a police box.
Later, Officer A met the victim again at another bar, attempted to request a settlement, and committed the crime while intoxicated, according to the investigation.

A prosecution official stated, "We will respond strictly to crimes against socially vulnerable groups," and added, "We will ensure that punishment corresponding to the crime is carried out."
