Hanjin Launches Pilot Operation of 'Cargo Bike' Delivery to Strengthen Eco-Friendly Shipping
Hanjin announced on the 8th that it will begin a pilot operation to introduce cargo bikes as part of its efforts to strengthen eco-friendly delivery activities in the carbon-neutral era.
Cargo bikes are powered by electricity, making them an eco-friendly transportation method in the carbon-neutral era. They are gaining attention as an optimal transportation means for short-distance last-mile delivery within areas where delivery vehicles cannot access on the ground.
Since the 23rd of last month, Hanjin has started a pilot operation by deploying one cargo bike and one dedicated delivery worker at the Helio City apartment complex in Songpa-gu, which ranks first nationwide in the number of apartment households in a single complex. The pilot operation will be expanded to some areas in Seoul.
Produced by Ecob, a company with excellent electric bicycle manufacturing technology that started as an in-house venture of Hyundai Motor Company, this cargo bike features three wheels that provide stability and can carry up to 130kg. It can travel 63km on a 4-hour charge.
For the pilot operation, Hanjin conducted operational safety tests and effectiveness reviews with the relevant delivery agency for two cargo bikes deployed for about two months in the second half of last year, finalizing the operational process.
Delivery using cargo bikes works as follows: when a Hanjin delivery vehicle arrives at the location where the cargo bike is parked within the apartment complex, the delivery worker transfers the packages from the delivery vehicle to the cargo bike and then completes the delivery by moving around the complex using the cargo bike.
A Hanjin official stated, “In line with the shift to an eco-friendly logistics paradigm, we will create new opportunities in the delivery market through eco-friendly mobility such as cargo bikes, which are expected to be utilized in various ways going forward.”
