Jeongeup-si Enrolls All Citizens in 'Bicycle Insurance'... Coverage Up to 10 Million KRW

Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk Province has made it possible for cyclists to receive up to 10 million KRW in coverage in case of an accident while riding a bicycle.

The city announced on the 7th that, following last year, it has enrolled all citizens in bicycle insurance again this year.

The newly enrolled bicycle insurance automatically covers all residents registered in the city, allowing them to receive insurance benefits in the event of an unexpected accident related to bicycle use.

The coverage period for this year's bicycle insurance is from the 8th of this month until March 7th of next year.

The insurance coverage includes accidents occurring while directly operating a bicycle, accidents occurring while riding a bicycle but not operating it, and accidents sustained by the insured from a bicycle while on the road.

The benefits include up to 10 million KRW for permanent disability, 10 million KRW for death, up to 500,000 KRW for injuries, and 200,000 KRW for hospitalization.

When a claim event occurs, the insured or their legal heir must submit a claim form along with relevant supporting documents to the insurance company.

In addition, the city is promoting a bicycle helmet support program to establish a culture of bicycle safety and encourage regular bicycle riding.

Any citizen who owns a bicycle and participates in regular bicycle riding (excluding previous applicants) can apply.

The program supports 50% of the helmet purchase cost (up to 30,000 KRW), and to receive the subsidy, applicants must apply at the local town office or community service center corresponding to their registered residence.

Mayor Lee Hak-su stated, “Promoting bicycle use will not only improve citizens’ health but also greatly help reduce traffic congestion. We plan to continue developing and implementing various policies to ensure citizens can use bicycles comfortably.”
