President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his deep sorrow and said, "My heart is heavy and I cannot contain my sadness," upon hearing the tragic news that a firefighter died in the line of duty while extinguishing a fire at a house in Gimje-si, Jeonbuk, on the night of the 6th. He added, "I pray for the deceased's soul and extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family."

President Yoon instructed, "The government must provide full honors without any shortcomings on the path the deceased takes, and also do its utmost to establish measures to prevent such tragic incidents from happening again."
According to the Presidential Office, the firefighter who died in the line of duty was Firefighter Seong Gong-il, born in 1993, who was appointed last year. During the fire suppression, Firefighter Seong heard from an elderly woman that "there is a grandfather inside," and rushed into the house but was found dead along with the grandfather, unable to escape.
