Seodo Sori and Gangnyeong Talchum... Meet Traditional Culture Riding the Spring Breeze
Seventeen Events Held Including National Intangible Cultural Heritage Public Performances
The National Intangible Heritage Center and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation announced on the 2nd that seventeen events, including public performances of national intangible cultural heritage and planned events organized by heritage holders, will be held this month.
The former refers to performances that faithfully reproduce the original form as recognized when designated as cultural heritage by holders or holder groups. On the 18th, at the Folk Theater Pungnyu in the National Intangible Heritage Training Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, a 'Seodosori' performance by holder Lee Chun-mok will take place. Seodosori is a folk song and miscellaneous song tradition passed down from Hwanghae-do and Pyeongan-do. It allows audiences to feel the melodies of the Seodo people who have lived resiliently in harsh environments. On the 25th, in Seongeup Village, Jeju, the southern Jeju sound, known as the 'treasure trove of folk songs,' will be presented. The unique Jeju dialect combined with a sorrowful tone offers a distinctive atmosphere.

The latter refers to performances and exhibitions freely planned by national intangible cultural heritage transmitters. A planned event for Gangnyeong Talchum, one of the 'Korean Mask Dances' inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list last year, will be held on the 25th in Seoul. Gangnyeong Talchum is a performance that humorously depicts social contradictions of the past, such as the yangban society and renegade monks, through lion dances, yangban and maltugi dances, and monk and chwi-bari dances. Additional event schedules can be found on the National Intangible Heritage Center website.
