Police Conduct Search and Seizure at Korea Coast Guard Over 'Equipment Procurement Corruption' (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Korea Coast Guard has come under investigation by the police after suspicions arose that preferential treatment was given to a specific company during the procurement of equipment.
At around 9 a.m. on the 24th, the Anti-Corruption and Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency dispatched investigators to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of the Incheon Korea Coast Guard, the Security Bureau, and the Equipment Technology Bureau to secure documents related to the acquisition and operation of patrol vessels.
The police received a complaint last month from a civic group alleging corruption, including ordering parts such as engines and radars used in Coast Guard vessels from a specific company, prompting the investigation.
After conducting a preliminary investigation for about a month following the receipt of the case, the police found grounds for suspicion and launched a sudden forced search and seizure operation on this day.
