Jeju Western Fire Station Conducts Sign Language Training for Volunteer Firefighters

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Western Fire Station (Chief Kim Young-ho) announced on the 15th that it held sign language education by inviting a sign language interpreter from the Korea Deaf Association Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sign Language Interpretation Center for 60 people, including volunteer fire brigade captains, at the conference room on the 14th.

This education was prepared to facilitate the distribution of residential fire safety equipment to 291 households with severe hearing impairments, which are the target of the 2023 resident participation budget project for the distribution of residential fire safety facilities.

As a recent case, on the 18th of last month, a fire broke out while sleeping in a house in Aewol-eup, but the sound of the standalone smoke detector alarm prevented casualties and the spread of the fire. However, it is difficult for hearing-impaired people to immediately recognize a fire.

Jeju Western Fire Station plans to distribute visual alarm-type detectors with a 'visual display function' and fire extinguishers to 291 households with severe hearing impairments this year using the resident participation budget.

The residential fire safety equipment distribution project involves volunteer fire brigades affiliated with the Western Fire Station visiting target households to install residential fire safety equipment, utilizing days such as the Residential Safety Inspection Day.

Chief Kim Young-ho said, “Hearing-impaired people find it difficult to recognize fires early, which can cause them to miss the golden time for evacuation. We will actively promote the distribution project of residential fire safety facilities to eliminate safety blind spots for fire-vulnerable groups and ensure practical safety prevention in daily life.”
