National Assembly Adopts Resolution to Commemorate and Support Recovery in Turkey and Syria

Lawmakers to Donate 3% of February Allowances as Contributions
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] On the 14th, the National Assembly passed a resolution urging support for Turkey and Syria, which suffered earthquake damage, at the plenary session.
The ruling and opposition parties held a plenary session that morning and passed the "Resolution to Commemorate the Victims of the Turkey-Syria Earthquake and Urge Support for Recovery" with 228 votes in favor and 1 abstention out of 229 members present. The death toll in both countries from the major earthquake that occurred on the 6th has currently been estimated to exceed 37,000.
Kim Tae-ho, chairman of the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee and a member of the People Power Party, explained the resolution as "commemorating the victims who lost their lives in this earthquake, expressing deep condolences and sympathy to the people of Turkey and Syria, urging our government to promote humanitarian aid and emergency relief, and to make efforts to ensure the safety of Korean residents, international students, and travelers."
Earlier that morning, the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee held a full meeting and approved the resolution. The resolution was prepared as a consolidated and coordinated alternative of three resolutions respectively proposed by People Power Party members Jeong Hee-yong and Jeong Jin-seok, and Democratic Party member Yoo Ki-hong.

Additionally, at the plenary session that day, the ruling and opposition parties also passed the "Bill on the Contribution of National Assembly Members' Donations," which donates 3% of the members' general allowance for February as a donation for the victims of the Turkey and Syria earthquake.
