KOSPI Ends Slightly Lower at 2480 Level... KOSDAQ Shows Modest Rise
[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sun-hee] On the 9th, the KOSPI index closed in a slightly weak tone at the 2480 level.
On this day, the KOSPI closed at 2481.52, down 2.12 points (0.09%) from the previous session. Although the KOSPI started lower in the early session and attempted to turn upward during the day, it ended slightly down due to selling pressure from institutional investors.
Looking at trading trends by investor type, individual investors and foreigners were net buyers of 213.9 billion KRW and 148.6 billion KRW respectively in the securities market. On the other hand, institutional investors sold off 383.7 billion KRW worth of stocks.
Earlier, hawkish remarks from U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) officials continued, and stock prices, especially in technology stocks such as Google, declined, leading to a weak overnight U.S. stock market. The KOSPI temporarily turned upward during the day as foreign demand improved, but it could not withstand institutional selling and closed lower.
By sector, non-metallic minerals (5.24%) and steel and metals (1.15%) showed gains, while finance (-1.56%), insurance (-1.44%), and textiles and apparel (-1.11%) declined.
Within the top 10 KOSPI market capitalization groups, results were mixed. LG Energy Solution closed at 550,000 KRW, up 4,000 KRW (0.73%) from the previous session. Samsung SDI (1.10%), LG Chem (1.19%), and Kakao (2.60%) also closed higher.
Conversely, Samsung Electronics recorded a decline of 100 KRW (-0.16%) to 63,000 KRW, and SK Hynix (-0.53%), Samsung Biologics (-0.25%), Samsung Electronics Preferred (-0.35%), NAVER (-0.22%), and Hyundai Motor (-0.06%) also fell.
On the same day, the KOSDAQ index closed at 784.58, up 4.60 points (0.59%). The KOSDAQ index started lower in the early session but closed higher during the day.
Although individuals and institutions were net sellers of 14.4 billion KRW and 93.4 billion KRW respectively, foreign investors were net buyers of 155 billion KRW, giving the index momentum.
Among the top market capitalization groups in KOSDAQ, EcoPro BM (7.13%), L&F (4.32%), EcoPro (10.59%), and Kakao Games (2.97%) closed higher, while Celltrion Healthcare (-0.50%) and HLB (-0.65%) declined.

Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market on the same day, the won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,260.4 KRW, up 0.3 KRW from the previous day's closing price.
