Various experience programs such as VR interactive storytelling and book art with picture books
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) has prepared various events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nowon Children’s Library.
Nowon Children’s Library, opened in 2003, is the first local government specialized library for children and currently serves as a user-centered complex cultural space visited by about 800 people daily.
This year marks the 20th anniversary, and special programs have been prepared to stimulate children’s interest in books and provide opportunities to form self-directed learning attitudes through various cultural education programs.
Meetings with authors Park Hyun-sook, Kim Ji-eun, and Kwon Moon-hee
First, the district will hold a ‘Meeting with the Author’ starting with author Park Hyun-sook. She is the author most wanted to meet by children selected through a vote conducted at the library over the past month. On the 15th at 11 a.m., she will share the background and episodes of the popular book series including ‘Suspicious Apartment’, and explain happiness found in a life of coexistence from a child’s perspective.
Next, on the 23rd, Kim Ji-eun, a children’s literature critic, will hold a meeting under the theme ‘Everything about Children’s Books’, covering topics such as selecting children’s books and guiding activities for caregivers. Finally, on the 28th, a session with Kwon Moon-hee, the representative author of flavorful traditional tales such as ‘Tied Tiger in a Row’ and ‘Blinking Goblin’, will be held.
Hokburi Old Man puppet play, children’s cinema, and exhibitions
There are also plenty of attractions. The creative three-dimensional puppet play ‘Rewritten Hokburi Old Man’ will be performed on the 18th at 11 a.m. for 50 minutes. It was adapted and created by the theater play group affiliated with the library.
On the 14th, 16th, and 22nd at 11 a.m., anyone using the library can watch movies. Minions, Frozen, and Inside Out will be screened.
Additionally, from the 14th to the 12th of next month, an exhibition of special books including the best books most loved by children recently, pop-up books, and big books will be held.
VR interactive storytelling, book art, and other experience programs
Children will have the chance to become the protagonist of ‘Aladdin’s Magic Lamp’ through a VR interactive storytelling experience held over two days on the 21st and 22nd. They will also read the picture book ‘Dream of Becoming Water’ (written by Lucid Fall, illustrated by Lee Su-ji) together and create book art works under the theme ‘What kind of dream am I dreaming?’
To celebrate the 20th anniversary, a library support ring-making experience, board games, traditional games (Yutnori, Gonggi Nori, Sabangchigi, etc.), and doodling play will be available in a permanent play experience zone. In addition, an event where participants complete missions by collecting stamps throughout the library will be held.
For detailed information on all programs, please refer to the district library website.
Meanwhile, last year, Nowon Children’s Library conducted 146 diverse programs including a mystery novel club with author Heo Gyo-beom, library pen pal friends, and storytelling coding, with a total participation of about 35,700 people.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “At the 20-year mark of operating the public library, we are exploring various ways to transform it into a cultural complex loved by residents. We will do our best to make Nowon Children’s Library a more familiar and representative children’s library for residents, using the 20th anniversary event as a milestone.”
Special Lecture by Ecological Environment Experts at Dobong Miracle Library
In 2023, ecological environment experts (authors, activists, etc.) will be invited in February, May, August, and November for interactive lectures
First session on February 25: Meeting with ecological picture book author Han Sung-min
Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eun-seok) Dobong Miracle Library will hold the ‘Eco Bookshelf Special Lecture’ program starting in 2023, where participants can listen to lectures by ecological environment experts and engage in discussions.
The ‘Eco Bookshelf Special Lecture’ is an interactive lecture rather than a one-way talk, scheduled to be held four times a year (last Saturday of February, May, August, and November).
The first session is scheduled for February 25 at 2 p.m., featuring a meeting with ecological environment picture book author Han Sung-min. Han Sung-min is the author of ecological environment picture books such as ‘Making a Red Earth, Making a Green Earth’, ‘Happy Green Island’, ‘Hello! Nice to Meet You’, ‘Safety First!’, and ‘Quiet Night’.
This meeting with the author is designed for families with children and will be conducted as an engaging lecture that sparks children’s interest and encourages them to talk, rather than a frustrating and difficult ecological environment education. Participants will also have the chance to experience paper cutting, a technique used in the picture book ‘Making a Red Earth, Making a Green Earth’, while discussing environmental topics with their children.
Applications are accepted from February 6 via the Dobong-gu Integrated Library website on a first-come, first-served basis until the number of participants is filled.
Oh Eun-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “We expect the Dobong Miracle Library’s ‘Eco Bookshelf Special Lecture’ to contribute to forming a local community where families interested in ecology and the environment can meet, empathize, and communicate over shared interests.”
