View original imageCosmax announced on the 7th that it has developed a ‘texture standard measurement’ technology that can predict the feel of cosmetics without application, through joint research with Professor Park Jundong’s research team at Sookmyung Women’s University.
According to Cosmax, cosmetic feel evaluations have so far involved subjective judgments by individuals. Therefore, even when using the same product, the degree of ‘spreadability’ and ‘moisture sensation’ expressed varies from person to person.
The texture standard measurement technology developed by Cosmax expresses the feel of cosmetics in concrete and quantified figures. It enables texture level measurement without human intervention, shortening product development time and increasing quality verification speed. It can be widely applied to the precise adjustment of feel as desired and the development of customized cosmetics.
Cosmax established the spreadability of essence formulations as objective figures after about three years of research. They subdivided the tactile characteristics of hundreds of essence formulation prescriptions with trained expert panels and established evaluation criteria. Then, objective quantification was carried out for each texture characteristic.
Subsequently, in collaboration with the research team at Sookmyung Women’s University, they completed the texture standard measurement technology using the LAOS (Large Amplitude Oscillatory Shear) method. The LAOS used in the study is a rheology technique that utilizes large amplitude oscillatory flow similar to the amplitude generated when applying cosmetics. Machine learning was applied to enhance predictability for technology commercialization. Through this, texture data of products could be obtained quickly and efficiently.

Lee Byungman, CEO of Cosmax, said, “This research result is significant in that it shifted the paradigm to objectively quantify the feel of cosmetics, which previously relied on subjective judgment,” adding, “We will expand the scope to various formulations and sensory characteristics and apply it to customized cosmetics development in the future.”
