Gangneung City Implements Comprehensive Measures for Spring Wildfire Prevention
Operation of 19 Wildfire Prevention Headquarters until 5.15
Preparation for Medium and Large Wildfires by Region... Refinement of Firefighting Command System
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangneung City, Gangwon Province, is stepping up full-scale wildfire preparedness and prevention measures for the spring season.
On the 7th, the city stated, "Every spring, wildfires frequently occur due to dry weather and strong winds, often spreading into large-scale wildfires."
The city has designated the period until May 15 as the Spring Wildfire Prevention Period and operates 19 wildfire prevention headquarters. It will intensively crack down on the burning of agricultural waste and garbage within 100 meters of forest-adjacent areas.
The city will deploy 105 professional firefighting personnel and 154 wildfire watchers, install unmanned cameras at 18 locations, and establish a monitoring system including 8 watchtowers and 84 observation posts.
In case of wildfire occurrence, as an initial firefighting measure, five helicopters (four from the Aviation Management Office and one leased) and 22 firefighting vehicles will be pre-positioned.
In particular, the city has established a "Wildfire On-site Integrated Command Manual" to prepare for medium to large-scale wildfires through a regional cooperation system, thereby organizing the wildfire firefighting command system.
To prevent the burning of agricultural waste, a major cause of wildfires, wood shredders have been pre-positioned at each eup and myeon office, and a flammable materials removal team is operating.
Earlier, in January last year, a wildfire caused by the arson of agricultural waste in Wichon-ri, Seongsan-myeon, burned 600㎡ of forest, causing significant damage.
