Efforts to provide cold-weather gear to protect seniors' health from record-breaking cold waves and harsh winter conditions
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has distributed cold-weather supplies to 637 seniors participating in public service activity-type projects.
In 2025, South Korea is expected to enter a ‘super-aged society’ with those aged 65 and over accounting for 20.6% of the population. Currently, seniors aged 65 and over make up 15.7% of Gwangjin-gu residents.
The district restarted senior job projects on February 1 to support the economic independence of these seniors and promote a vibrant and healthy old age. They began distributing cold-weather items including one padded vest and one scarf per person.
The recipients include 637 seniors participating in ‘public service activity-type’ projects such as ▲community environmental guardians ▲nono care (senior conversation helpers) ▲park management assistants ▲gateball environment maintenance ▲parking lot management assistants.
The district especially prepared cold-weather gear to help seniors engaged in frequent outdoor activities in these projects protect their health from the cold. Moreover, this winter has seen record-breaking cold waves due to abnormal climate changes.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We hope seniors can work in warm and safe jobs,” adding, “We will provide multifaceted support so that seniors can enjoy economically and psychologically healthy old age.”
If the cold wave continues, the district plans to distribute additional cold-weather supplies to protect the health of participating seniors and will spare no effort in support.

Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) is the first autonomous district to provide up to 200,000 KRW monthly rent support to homeless young single-person households.
The ‘Eunpyeong-type Youth Monthly Rent Support Project’ is a campaign promise of the 8th local government administration aimed at alleviating the high housing cost burden on young single-person households.
Compared to existing projects by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Seoul Metropolitan Government, the age eligibility has been expanded, income criteria relaxed, and maximum support per person increased.
Eligible applicants are homeless single-person households aged 19 to 39 (born between 1983 and 2004) residing in Eunpyeong-gu. Application conditions include below 150% of median income, general assets under 100 million KRW, rental deposit under 50 million KRW, and monthly rent under 600,000 KRW.
Applications can be submitted on the Eunpyeong-gu Office website from the 6th to the 14th of this month. After detailed screening of eligibility, income, and rent criteria, selected recipients will be notified by the end of March. In case of ties, older applicants will be prioritized.
Selected recipients must submit proof of monthly rent payment within the designated period according to further instructions and can receive rent support for up to 12 months. If reasons for suspension such as moving to another region occur, recipients must apply for suspension with the relevant department; failure to do so may result in repayment of support funds.
