Growing Global Strong Small and Medium Enterprises through Intellectual Property Support

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] The Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center of the Changwon Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Gyeongnam is implementing the "Intellectual Property (IP)-Based Overseas Expansion Support" project this year to provide comprehensive support for intellectual property rights to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Gyeongnam Province.

This project, aimed at fostering SMEs with export performance or planned exports in Gyeongnam Province into global strong small and medium enterprises by strengthening their competitiveness, is open to any eligible SMEs.

The Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center plans to newly select 11 companies through a two-stage evaluation process: first, document screening and on-site inspection, followed by a second stage interview evaluation.

The selected companies can receive support related to intellectual property rights (patents, brands, designs) tailored to their circumstances, with an annual maximum support amount of up to 70 million KRW for up to three years. The support limit will be determined after consulting with the Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center, and a certain percentage of co-payment by the company will apply depending on the detailed project.

The detailed support projects include overseas application, office action (OA), and registration costs; non-English brand development; patent mapping; production of patent technology promotional videos; design development (product, packaging, visual); design mapping; brand development (new or renewal); patent & design convergence; and corporate IP management diagnosis and establishment, among others.

This support project is jointly promoted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Changwon City, Gimhae City, and Yangsan City. Through pre-consultation by expert consultants from the Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center, customized support is provided for each exporting SME, resulting in high satisfaction among beneficiary companies. Last year, a total of 37 companies received comprehensive intellectual property support for 172 cases through the Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center.

A representative of the Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center stated, "In the rapidly changing global economic environment, it is necessary for our companies to have intellectual property-based technological competitiveness to expand into overseas markets. The center will make further efforts to strengthen support for local companies' overseas expansion."

Applications for the project are open from January 6 to February 15. For detailed inquiries about the support methods and procedures, please contact the Gyeongnam Intellectual Property Center.
