LG Energy Solution-Seoul National University, Joint Research on Next-Generation Batteries
Development of All-Solid-State Batteries and Lithium-Sulfur Batteries
Active Cooperation in Discovering Outstanding Talent
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] LG Energy Solution and Seoul National University are embarking on the development of next-generation battery technology and nurturing outstanding talent through industry-academia collaboration.
On the 20th, LG Energy Solution held a business agreement signing ceremony for the establishment of an industry-academia cooperation center at Seoul National University in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, attended by LG Energy Solution CTO (Chief Technology Officer) Vice President Shin Young-jun, Next-Generation Battery Development Center Director Son Kwon-nam, Seoul National University College of Engineering Dean Hong Yoo-seok, and College of Engineering Academic Affairs Dean Lee Jong-min.
Based on this business agreement, both parties will actively cooperate to develop next-generation battery materials and related technologies. They agreed to establish a joint industry-academia cooperation system for building a research and development (R&D) network and nurturing excellent human resources.
Additionally, LG Energy Solution’s R&D and patent-related capabilities will be organically combined with Seoul National University’s outstanding research achievements and experience in talent development to create various synergies.

LG Energy Solution and Seoul National University have identified a total of nine industry-academia cooperation projects, including the development of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries and materials for lithium-sulfur batteries. They are also reviewing additional projects in the small battery sector, so the number of joint industry-academia cooperation projects is expected to increase.
Vice President Shin said, “In the rapidly changing battery market, securing core technologies through open innovation with world-leading schools and research institutions is essential. Through this collaboration, we will actively secure next-generation battery materials and analysis technologies, enhance customer value, and nurture outstanding talent.”
Dean Hong of the College of Engineering stated, “This agreement provides an opportunity for Seoul National University’s research infrastructure and personnel to grow to the next level. We hope that through collaboration with LG Energy Solution, Seoul National University can contribute to the advancement of next-generation battery technology.”
Meanwhile, LG Energy Solution has established various industry-academia collaborations with leading domestic and international universities and research institutions through open innovation activities.
In November last year, it signed an industry-academia cooperation agreement with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) for battery materials and analysis technology, and in September of the same year, it signed an industry-academia cooperation agreement with Yonsei University for electric vehicle battery technology development. It has also established and operates contract departments with Korea University and Hanyang University.
