Wando-gun Secures 10 Billion Won for 'Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project' Selection
Implementing Projects Aligned with Social, Economic, and Geographic Characteristics
[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) has been selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' '2023 Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project' and secured a total project budget of 10 billion KRW.
According to the county on the 20th, in August last year, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries established four major strategies and prepared implementation plans to realize a leap-forward marine economy and a vibrant sea community, including sustainable fisheries and the return of people to fishing villages over five years.
Among them, the Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project is a follow-up project to the 'Fisheries Village New Deal 300 Project' initiated in 2019, aimed at preventing the extinction crisis of fishing villages and enhancing vitality.
In particular, fishing villages nationwide are classified into three types: 'economic platform,' 'living platform,' and 'safety infrastructure,' to improve residential conditions and convenience of life in fishing villages.
The county prepared the project to raise brand value by creating 'the first village of the Dadohae' in Mangnam-ri, an abalone-specialized village where most households are engaged in fishing, by providing fishing activity spaces for fishermen and community spaces for tourists who come to experience abalone.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries evaluated projects from 38 local governments, and Wando-gun achieved the honor of being selected.
With this project selection, 10 billion KRW (7 billion KRW national funds, 900 million KRW provincial funds, 2.1 billion KRW county funds) will be invested over four years to implement projects tailored to the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of Mangnam-ri.
Mangnam Port accounts for more than 70% of the total abalone production in Wando-gun, so the plan is to create a specialized village and generate youth jobs to increase the population returning to rural and fishing life and improve residential conditions.
Through the Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project, it is expected to contribute not only to the expansion of a safe and efficient fishing foundation and increased local income but also to job creation effects in business, startups, and operations.
Governor Shin Woo-cheol stated the development direction, saying, "Through the Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project, we will create an innovative fishing village Wando-gun that is not only developed but also a place where people want to visit and live."
