Jongno District Office Small Gallery 'Mulbangul' Exhibition of Works by Artist Kim Chang-yeol

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Mun-heon) has created a 'small gallery' by utilizing leftover spaces on the 1st to 3rd floors of the district office building, allowing visitors and employees to enjoy art pieces and take a short break.

The plan is to sequentially replace and showcase the district's collection of artworks, with the first exhibition featuring a print exhibition by internationally renowned artist Kim Chang-yeol, known for his work centered on 'water droplets.'

Previously, in May 2021, the artist's family donated a total of 269 works, including pieces by Kim Chang-yeol, to Jongno-gu.

The prints on display this time include 18 pieces selected from the donation: untitled works and compositions from the 1960s before he began focusing on 'water droplets,' 11 pieces from the 'Return' series spanning the 1980s to 2000s, 2 'water droplet' pieces from the 1990s and 2000s, and 3 prints from a 1986 series. This exhibition offers significant insight into his artistic activities from the 1960s through the 2000s.

Kim Chang-yeol's print exhibition will run until March this year, and from April, visitors can view works by artist Park No-su.

In September 2020, before Kim Chang-yeol's passing, Jongno-gu signed an agreement to transform the artist's house into a cultural space. Located in Pyeongchang-dong, the residence was his only domestic studio and the place where he lived for over 30 years during his lifetime.

The district plans to open this site as a cultural facility in 2024, where visitors can experience not only the artist's works but also his reflections on art, philosophy, and traces of his life.

District Mayor Jeong Mun-heon stated, “I recommend that visitors to the district office take some time after their business to appreciate Kim Chang-yeol's works and enjoy a moment of healing. We will continue to introduce various cultural and artistic resources owned by Jongno-gu so that residents can easily access them in their daily lives.”
