[Asia Economy Reporter Byeon Seon-jin] The prosecution has requested the death penalty and life imprisonment for the defendants in the Daejeon Kookmin Bank pistol robbery-murder case that occurred 22 years ago.
On the 16th, at the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 12 (Presiding Judge Na Sang-hoon), during the sentencing hearing for Lee Seung-man (53) and Lee Jeong-hak (52) on charges including murder, the prosecution requested the court to impose the maximum legal penalties of death and life imprisonment respectively. They also ordered the attachment of electronic monitoring devices (electronic anklets) for 30 years.
In their final statement, the prosecution said, "Lee Seung-man still denies some of the charges, claiming he did not fire the pistol, but considering the crime was carried out in a concrete and meticulous manner, and that Lee Jeong-hak had no shooting experience, it is difficult to accept Lee Seung-man's claim."
Lee Seung-man and Lee Jeong-hak were arrested and indicted on charges of blocking a cash transport vehicle with a passenger car in the underground parking lot of Kookmin Bank in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, around 10 a.m. on December 21, 2001, shooting and killing Kim Mo (then 45), the bank's cashier manager, with a .38 caliber pistol, and fleeing after stealing a bag containing 300 million won in cash.
